Google ads advertise stuff. Advertisers pay per click through from a site to theirs. Publishers - people on whose web sites the google ads appear receive a proportion of the "cost-per-clcik" paid to Google by the advertiser.

Google Ads are fun and revenue generating. They "monetise" your site in Google Ads jargon.
